Humanising Prison
The condition of prison in India is going from the worst situation. There is a various instance when government and court both tried their best to improve the condition of prison as well as prisoners, but due to increasing corruption and unwanted practices never given their attention to implementing government and courts orders at ground level i.e at the level of inside prison. As prison is the place where no private individuals from outside are allowed to check/see the condition of prison as well as prisoners. Only the police personnel were deployed there to check the activities of inmates.
Problems of Contact diseases
Many cases of contact diseases are found that prisoner in jail suffering from severe diseases like AIDS & HIV. It was also found in a police survey report that inmates those are suffering from such diseases were healthy before they caught. Various studies also show that these diseases are growing in prison with rapid pace, as because police personnel are not giving much attention towards their prisoner's health. The reason behind such diseases is their same blankets, same plates, sometimes using the same sops and oils, etc spreading the disease at an unprecedented level. It created the problems of contact diseases which is very harmful to those inmates, not having such diseases.
Behaviour with women inmates
Behaviour with women inmates
As there are some cases of police personnel misbehaviour, sexual assault and harassment of women inmates, there were also cases of brutal rapes inside the prison. The police personnel of high ranks used their prestige and powers to fulfil their sexual desire by exploiting the lives of women inmates. One important reason for such cases is due to less number of women police personnel in high and well as in lower ranks both. The second reason as there is very less number of women prison as compared to men prison, such a situation shows the disparity between genders still exists in our country.
Some appreciative work was also done by few state government like Telangana and Madhya Pradesh government by making open-cell/ jail for women and providing the opportunity to fulfil their dream inside the jail, like studying and some other creative works like art and craft, making paintings, writing poems and many other things that improve their livelihood.
NGOs Role Improving lives of Inmates
The most important role today is being played by the NGOs and Common cause organizations to improve the condition of inmates by the continuous survey of prison after a certain interval, by checking the condition of food and other services provided by the government to the inmates, whether fulfilled at ground level or not. Such a survey really helps our women inmates and with the help of these organizations, they can cite their problems and brutalities being faced inside the prison.
The government of India should form a committee of the eminent personalities from a different section of societies like retd. IAS, working NGOs, judges of the high court, the member from Common cause organizations and some intellectual persons to check and survey the prison at regular interval and take action on culprits, only then the condition may change from worst to better. By doing so we can achieve the target of HUMANISING PRISON as well as PRISONER.
