Why Gandhi Ji preferred Liberal way to abolish Untouchability, rather Radical as BR Ambedkar?

Gandhi Ji always insisted and pursued the policy of  "be changed to see change '' in the world. This thought of Gandhi Ji reveals and reflect how a great person like him always attached himself with the land and root of India.

His views towards untouchables, deprived and undermined peoples always keep him in touch with these peoples when he took the glimpse of problems of untouchables he got shocked, the atrocities and social boycott they were facing by the few upper class and well literate peoples in the society, he got disappointed and realised the pain and suffering of untouchables, then at the large scale he immediately launched untouchables movement and laid the foundation of "Harijan Sevak Sangh", his sole motto was to remove the root cause of the problem that inflicted on the untouchables from centuries in the name of caste, social hierarchy and varna system.

He started this movement by creating awareness in rural areas that everyone is a child of the same God and God loves her every child equally without any discrimination based on class, caste and creed. Requested and appealed to the people of the upper class to open your heart for your brother and leave the differences, myth and illusion aside which betrayed, exploited and deprived your brother of ancient times in the name of caste and varna system.

His awareness was more in the field of social and cultural activities and he pressed more on to change of thoughts and thinking towards untouchables and embrace them like a small child and give them their respective prestige and respect, which they are being deprived of a long time, allow everyone to share public places equally whether it's a temple, bathing ghats, hotels, public parks, etc without any prejudiced and leave the conservative and stereotype mindset which invokes hatred among untouchables and creates a sense of inferiority among them. He said that if our ancient books and laws upheld the untouchability or allowed discrimination, we should ignore these facts because truth never confines under the books. It might be relevant at that time but we should change ourself with changing needs and time. By depriving them their certain rights and values eventually, we are depriving our god of their respective share.

Gandhi Ji moved from village to village to make awareness and sensitize peoples especially upper class to change their thinking towards untouchables and treat them fairly, wisely and humanly and not let them feel that they are inferior or they are born only for serving upper classes.

Gandhi Ji's dream was that when every human being changes their behaviour, thinking and mindset and believe that everyone is equal, work should never become criteria to decide whether a person is inferior or superior. For this purpose, he introduced bread labour, which means work for everyone for at least the bread we eat.

Dr BR Ambedkar was the most talented Indian Political thinker, statesman and great educationist, was born in Mahr caste, which was considered as untouchables by the Hinduism. He faced unprecedented problems during his early days which compels him to look at the problems and issues of untouchability which they face in society. He was radical in his working and spoke always against class and the caste system.

His view differs from Gandhi Ji in various aspects like he insisted on removing class and caste-based society but Gandhi Ji was against this spirit and said class and caste has no role to play in promoting untouchability. It grows only because of a few selfish peoples in society. Secondly, when Ambedkar pressed for the abolition of the varna system, Gandhi Ji said that the Varna system was the very principle foundation of Hinduism. Altering the varna system would destroy the framework of the whole society. Thirdly, when Ambedkar said untouchables should give up eating meat, beef, stop drinking liquor give up dragging the dead cattle which symbolises the work of untouchables.
Gandhi Ji argued that those who performed dirty jobs become dirty only bodily for the time being, like any other human being who becomes dirty by performing their day- to- day activities. So it doesn't mean they are permanently dirty or untouchables.

However, Gandhiji's stands of abolishing and removing untouchability were liberal one, which considered moral upliftment of upper class, changes in their thinking and thought that everyone is equal and child of the same god. While BR Ambedkar was radical in abolishing untouchability, wanted overall abolishment of class, caste and varna system. But today we can see that Gandhiji's stand was more appreciative because when a person will not change their views towards untouchables, nothing will going to help in abolition of untouchability
