International Relations Matters

This planet is made up of various organisms, namely animals, plants, humans and other natural resources which help us to survive on this planet. This planet is not a uniform one, somewhere terrain, somewhere plateau and somewhere plain. The interesting thing about the plain area, that it's not connected smoothly but it's connected in fragments meant somewhere river and somewhere plain.

We can understand that when lands are not distributed uniformly by nature, then it means natural resources also not distributed uniformly. Now at this juncture, we realise coordination and connectivity is required to every part of this planet so that we can reach to the natural resources and acquire them which nature gifted to us.

Several countries realise the importance of natural resources found in different regions of the planet which is endowed to human beings by nature. From here started the journey of International Relations.

In modern-day, International Relations, a name has been accorded to the world, in the name of connecting one country to another and to carry out their diplomatic relations. Later the IR has adopted several significant objectives like increasing trade and commerce, cultural ties between countries, connecting people to people to realise the new potential in the field emerging new technologies and enhancement of global education.

Countries are cooperating on emerging threats like terrorism, insurgency and cross-border infiltration attacks. Problems like deteriorating climate change, increasing carbon dioxide in nature creating difficulties for the human being to survive. To mitigate the growing complications and difficulties various multi-lateral forums have been founded. We could see that International Relations are helping us by the combined effort of every country and by resolving issues pertaining to danger to human lives.

From ancient to modern times we could witness that the spirit and ambition of IR not changed. Earlier the IR and diplomatic exchanges were made to increase trade relations and influence the presence of the trade in the world. The scenario has the same even in the modern period too, the countries use their diplomacy to increase their trade and financial activity.

Some significant changes we can see in modern days like the countries that are developed or powerful trying to influence their trade relations on one side and manipulating power politics of poor countries on another side, which was mot observed during ancient times, where the main intention was trade and profit increment.

In the 21st century, IR played a very vital and crucial role to enhance our (India) credibility and presence at global stature as soft power. India, from independence, is a vibrant and high-spirited democracy, never caught in the bipolar political world of the US and USSR. When India got independence, it was a very poor country, British Raj plundered every penny from the subcontinent. Left India divided into two autonomous nations on the religious basis made the country vulnerable to communal riots, mass rapes and killings; spread hatred between two civilized religion Hindus and Muslims whose glimpse is also visible in this era too.

In such a situation when India got Independence from British Raj, with the help of several countries (Indonesia, India and Ghana Founding countries) formed the NAM (non-alignment movement) its ambition was to consolidate a group of countries, those were earlier colonised by the western world and came to be known as third world countries. This strand of India philosophically rose the stature of the country globally but it did not help India to achieve economic excellence which India deserved.

As pointed by David Malone author of Does the Elephant Dance? "Non-alignment to Indians was neither neutrality nor alignment. Philosophically it signified 'freedom of action', a concomitant of India's Independence. At a time when the world was bifurcating, non-alignment helped India achieve, with some flair, minimal external objectives while it coped with daunting domestic challenges".

I conclude that the international community still rely on the international system to manage tensions and disputes. The system has the capacity as well as capability to resolve any grievous issue pertain to human existence. Its duty of every nation that gives a fair chance to every country irrespective of its size, population and economy.

As pointed out by Paul Wilkinson, "Failure to do so could lead to disaster, as the system is all too capable of destroying itself. The statesman must be committed to international peace and security. Although, democracy may not be the modal form of government worldwide foreign policy should nonetheless be conducted to certain underlying principles that should be promoted globally.
