Is Universal Basic Income Is The Need Of Hour?

Universal Basic Income

The deadliest impact of COVID-19 can be witnessed across the World. The magnitude and momentum which the virus has gaining and affecting people sometimes seems as unbearable and could have a disastrous effect, beyond what we have presumed.

The implication of fatal virus has more on vulnerable section such as poor, deprived and marginalised. They are bearing the brunt of being poor tender services throughout their life to the affluent classes from agriculture to establishing industries. Their sacrifice, devotion, hard work and honesty towards their lord led them at the brink of extinction and now by sacrificing their life, paying the last tribute.

In democratic countries, it seems that capitalist gets more concession, privileges and favour by the government at the cost of the worker. The situation further deteriorated as former knew that they could only survive, if the latter work hard, diligently and conscientiously. So, some allowances and allocation from time to time by the government to worker flows to keep the trust maintained. But what they prefer never got.

Even then the democratic regimes prevail because it posses some universal features which we did not find in other forms of the governing system. Broadly speaking it entitled political and civil liberties to their citizen.

Political rights consist of the universal adult franchise that is right to vote, right to equality before the law and the right to participate in the political process. Political rights are supplemented by civil rights which too enhanced its stature. Civil liberties are the right to free and fair trial, the right to express one's views and the right to protest and express dissents.

The aforementioned rights and freedom worked only while selecting and rejecting i.e., only during the time of election later it suppressed brutally, it doesn't matter whether the government is elected by the people or selected by the powerful elite or affluent classes.

Witnessing the harsher life of workers in this situation countries need to adopt a blend of a system of democracy and socialism. This could be achieved by giving concession to the proletarians and putting a reasonable restriction on capitalist. This would fulfil the current needs of both the employer and employed and would also not compromise the governance system countries adopted.

Regarding worker as a god, they are the only source through which we develop, build and create from big industries to small houses, from manual works to work by machine. Treating them every one as the child of same god and god never discriminates to their child based on income, status and colour. So embrace them and give them their respected share, prestige and wealth which are entitled to them by nature.

Coming to universal basic income, by birth every child should be treated as a valuable asset of this planet. They have every right to ask for their share in food, clothes and other basic necessary things needed to live a decent and dignified life of a respected citizen of this planet.

Natural calamities such as COVID-19 unprecedently affected humanity and led to the verge of extinction, under calamitous situation human begins have no other choice instead of fighting naturally to sustain their lives and depend on the government for basic necessary things to survive.

Since we have witnessed various virus type diseases like Spanish flu of 1918 caused by H1N1 influenza a virus lasted till early September 1919, it infected nearly 500 million people, and about a third of the world's population at the time. The pandemic was considered as the deadliest pandemic in human history. The death toll estimated somewhere from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million.

Another such pandemic was swine flu pandemic, as influenza pandemic lasted for about 20 months. There were 1.6 million officially infected by the pandemic.

Considering past experiences of the fatal and destructive virus, this is the time when we have to take steps effectively and cautiously without showing immaturity we could mitigate the COVID-19 virus. But we know human beings only takes precautionary steps when alarming situation or death comes at the door.

Who Bear brunt?

NOW IT IS THE RIGHT TIME  when we have to come out with the white paper of Universal Basic Income, considered as a periodic payment delivered to all on an individual without means a test or work requirement. This income should be devoted to every citizen of the planet by their respective countries to live a meaningful and dignified life which human being deserves.

Now the question arises whether affluent, prosperous and wealthy citizens should also get the benefit or they should be kept out from this scheme. The name universal basic income itself suggest that this scheme covers everyone whether poor or rich, educated or illiterate or employed or unemployed.

If we deprive any section of people from this scheme the universality of this scheme destroy itself and the intent which we have thought to achieve by this scheme such as every human being gets food, shelter and clothes to keep humanity alive would destroy.

Some peoples indeed possess capabilities to ensure their basic needs without assistance or help from the government, but for the sake of few, we can't deprive the whole humanity.

Its depend on different countries to whether they cover every citizen under this scheme or have the plan to exclude rich and wealthy class. To the extent, poor should be and they should be given their share which they deserve for the sake of humanity.

Calamities such as COVID-19 led us to realise the position or place which domestic-worker, servent and helper possess in our life. They help us manually and sacrifice their entire life serving us in our daily chores to carrying, caring and helping our family so that we could not face any trouble and difficulty.

But at this moment, we are spectating that by sacrificing their every moment for others they are unable to manage twice a meal for the day. Such severe and difficult situation which they are facing, somewhere both government and affluent class responsible behind it.

It's, the right time to amend our past blunder of ignoring poor, migrant workers and marginalised people by enacting universal basic income scheme which at least gives them pride of being human if not poor.
