As we are living in the 21st-century development can be seen in every sphere of life, every sector, every country, every city, every village, have their own pace of development. But what is still stagnant is the extreme and abject poverty in the lives of poor, slum dwellers, scheduled caste and other minority groups. Now, the question arises when a country is growing with rapid pace, then why poverty is moving at a slow pace?
Ancient reasons of poverty were because of the dominant role of upper caste and due to the written structure of the varna system in our Vedic text, this really affects the lives of backward class peoples, never given them sufficient opportunity to get rid off. In the modern period, as the country was totally under the grip of Britishers and they used the resources of India to become supreme power, used India as a supplier of raw materials and exploit the country and its innocent citizens at the verge of exploitation.
After being independent the county begins its new journey to move towards the path of development. After achieving some fruitful and productive economic power it seems that the country has passed all the hurdles to become a prosperous and happy nation. But the reality inside the country was totally different from the outside world that is due to rampant corruption in the country's political system and in bureaucracy left the country and poor people of the country on the mercy of incapable and corrupt politician.
Various schemes were started by past and present government to eradicate poverty but due to lack of implementation of those schemes at ground level continued the lives of measurable peoples in the same way as they were living during the British era.
Various international reports showed that more than half of the Indian population living below the poverty line and more than thirty per cent of the population does not have a meal twice a day. Such condition reflects that India's independence, growth and development reached to an only small section of peoples.
Since this year (2019-20) is election year major parties are talking about schemes like (Universal Basic Income), recently this scheme is launched by Sikkim government, to provide minimum income to every individual of concerned state to meet their basic needs (ex-food, clothing, housing, etc). Actually, this type of scheme would be very helpful to eradicate poverty if implemented wisely and judiciously for poor ones.
The best way to eradicate poverty is to first identify poor ones. Only by starting initiatives and schemes would not help without identifying the actual destitute. After identification, one can provide them with some special privileges to get out of poverty only for some defined period. Since long term privileges for any section could become a problem for other section of society.
Gandhi offered us a 'talisman' to use in moments of doubt and confusion. He asked us to recall the face of the poorest, most defenceless, most powerless men we have encountered. Today he would have recognised that they would probably be poor. Ask ourselves whether what we are attempting has meaning for these peoples; does it touch their lives with dignity and worth? Does it argument power and self-reliance? If it does, it must surely be the right thing to do. It is this talisman that we need to hold up to the public policy.
Why Gender Wage Disparity Increasing continuously?
